Christian Marriage Counseling
If you’re going to be getting married soon, you and your partner may want to consider getting some counseling, so that you’ll have a better idea of what to expect before you become husband and wife.
Does God care? Many who seek help will find the God really does care and that reassurance is vital to healing.
Here are some of the things you should be prepared for during your Christian marriage counseling, as well as some resources that will help you to find counselors in your area.
One of the main themes that you will probably hear during your counseling is keeping the love of God in your home. This, according to Christianity, means that you must remember to speak to one another gently and with kindness, and that you must always keep the roles of the man and woman in mind during your marriage. One of the main obstacles to any marriage is the fact that the statistics of successful marriages is dim. Thos of course is due the ever damaging problems of infidelity, mental disorders, disabling injuries, the ability or inability to have a child and a host of others.
According to the Bible, the man is to be the head of the household, and the woman is supposed to be his helper. Men are expected to love their wives with all of their hearts (so much so that they would die for them), and women are expected to submit or respect their husbands completely.
There are basically three areas that cause people to seek counseling;
1)Personal problems on both sides that happen in every type of marriage.
2)The loss of intimacy between the two of you.
3)A sense of the desertion of God and his purpose for your marriage.
Even though most marriages are based on these Christian principles in one way or another, many people do not follow these ideals exactly due to cultural changes. And, while some of the principles may need to be adjusted in order to fit a couple’s lifestyle, these principles should still be adhered to, especially if the couple is committed to living a Christian lifestyle.
Another topic that will be discussed during your counseling is the issue of money. Finances are the main reasons that many marriages break up, and so your counselor will probably ask you and your future mate to write down some of the main things you would want to spend money on.
You’ll then have to decide which of the things are a priority to you, and which items you can purchase that will be a benefit to the entire household, as opposed the an item that you would purchase for personal satisfaction.
Money issues may also be the result of whether or not both spouses plan on working, and this should also be discussed in your session. Your Christian marriage counseling session may also include advice about how to handle the money in your bank accounts, or whether or not the two of you should keep separate accounts. The counselor may also have suggestions on how you can use your money according to the Bible, including giving an offering to the church.
